Periodontal disease, also known as gum disease or pyorrhea, is an infection of the tissue (gums, bone, and ligaments) that support and surround your teeth. If left untreated, periodontal disease can cause swelling and/or pain of the gums, bleeding, eventual tooth loss, and degeneration of the jaw bone that once supported the teeth.
