Reviews for Camp Winona
It has taken me two years to calm down enough to write this review rationally. I am a big proponent of the traditional overnight summer camp experiences. I went to wonderful Scout and YMCA camps as a kid, and before Camp Winona in DeLeon Springs, FL, my children had wonderful camp experiences as well. However, when I came to pick up my child after one week at Camp Winona in DeLeon Springs, FL, he could barely walk and had second-degree burns (yellow pussy sores and areas without skin) over almost half of his body. When I confronted his counselor, he only said, “my bad” before shrugging and walking off. Upon further questioning, I discovered that after my child received a red burn on the first day because he forgot to put on sunscreen, the staff kept him in the sun for the rest of the week. By the fourth evening, he and his cabin mates could not remove his shirt because it was attached to the raw flesh on his back, so he was sent to the nurse who ripped off his shirt, gave him a Tylenol before sending him back to his cabin. Please, give your children the joys of a traditional overnight camping program, but do not trust your child to Camp Winona in Deleon Springs, FL, where the nurse, counselors, and administration ignored the severity of my son’s situation.
